A tribute to a great lady...

CH 'PR' Mazzie's Molly Tufftown

Webster's Dictionary defines "great" as "eminent, distinguished, illustrious, superior, very impressive, imposing, grand, remarkable, highest in its class." This truly attests to who Molly was and her contribution to the breed.

It all began on May 3, 1974 when Mazzie's Molly was born. I gave Molly to my husband Larry for his birthday. She was only four-and-a-half weeks old when I brought her home to our one-and-a-half acre ranchette in Norco, California. She grew up with my two sons and all our other animals, including two other dogs, two cats, rabbits, geese, hogs, calves, a pony and horses. She got along fine with all of them, except the neighbor's cats.

One day, while playing in the front yard, she caught the attention of a lady who was walking by our home. Inquiring about her, she told me Molly was an oustanding specimen of the breed and that I should show her. The lady's name was Sam Haynes. To her I give all the credit for getting Molly and I started in the show ring. After a lot of help from Sam, Molly and I were ready for our first fun match. At just four months of age, over an entry of twelve dogs (nine adults and three pups), Molly was chosen Best of Breed! She then went into the Terrier Group and placed second out of twelve dogs. WOW! Molly and I were hooked for life.

Before U.K.C. started point shows, Molly was shown at 40 fun matches. There were 34 different Judges who gave her Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex and her class. The only time she tasted defeat was just 10 weeks after she whelped a litter of 10 pups. She still placed second out of 14 dogs in her class. In 1975, Molly won Best of Opposite Sex award given by the original APBT Club of Southern California

Due to Molly's oustanding qualities and all the winning she was doing, we decided to breed her if we could find a suitable mate. We hoped that she would be one of those rare females that would pass on some of her oustanding qualities to her offspring. After many months of searching, Larry, quite by accident, met a man at a show with a beautiful black male. 'PR'Tarantinos Jo Palooka was exactly the type of dog we had been looking for. If you can ever pinpoint a time in history of a breed when that turning point in quality is achieved, you are lucky. At 19 months of age, Molly had her first litter on December 28, 1975. She whelped a litter of two males and eight females.

Her offspring promptly followed in their dam's footprints. Larum's Badger, Larum's Fancy Pants and Larum's Snuffy consistently won first, second and third places, Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. Badger's first time showing, she won Best Female Puppy and Best Puppy in Show over a total puppy entry of 40.

Dick and Nancy Jones bought their first male APBT from us. He was a son of Molly's littermate brother, Captain's Cheyenne. They called him Big John of Tufftown. When they picked up Big John, they also saw Badger and wanted to buy her. She was not for sale at that time. A few months later, when we decided to move to Nevada, and with the understanding that Badger was to be shown, we sold her to the Jones'. Later, they acquired Molly's other daughter, Larum's Calamity Jane, changing her name to Calamity of Tufftown.

Dick and Nancy now had three oustanding dogs of mine. Due to their efforts and training, their hopes were realized on February 3, 1980. On that day, Molly became the dam of the first APBT U.K.C. Champion in the U.S.A., 'PR' Calamity of Tufftown! In quick succession, Big John became the first male Champion in the U.S.A. A day later Badger became the third APBT Champion. History was made!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Molly was doing what came natural to her-proving day in and day out that her temperament was as true and sound as her conformation. She helped me to raise my two sons, Devin and Cody, while working the ranch. One of Molly and Devin's favorite games was for Devin to tie a rope around Molly's neck and then tie the other end to a bench that was turned upside down. Then Molly would happily pull Devin all around the yard. And for more serious work on the ranch, she had no peers. Her job was to corner our 1,600-pound Charolais bull so that I could cross the pasture and feed the hogs. If the bull tried to get by her, she would grab his nose and bring him to his knees. Then she would hold him until I was safely through the pasture.

When we moved to Fallon, Nevada, after a three-year period Molly was again bred to Joe Palooka. Sad as it was, most people in Nevada did not show. Only a few pups were placed in show homes. We kept a daughter that was a look-alike to Badger, naming her Larum's Country.

With mixed emotions, we decided that because of the oustanding job Dick and Nancy were doing with their Tufftown Kennel and Molly's offspring, we would send Molly down to them. While at Tufftown, Molly was bred to Martin's Caesar. From that mating two more Champions were produced.

When Molly was about six years old, Nancy decided she would be shown for her Championship. On February 13,1983, Molly proved to the world how great she was. She became CH 'PR' Mazzie's Molly Tufftown, the first dog in the history of the APBT to become a Champion at over eight-and-a-half years of age-winning over some of her own offspring to obtain her title in the process.

Molly's contribution to the breed is truly awesome! To a dog fancier, it gives you chills of pleasure to read the record. Through generations, her quality and temperament is being passed on by her daughters and sons. There are ten of her daughters and two of her sons who have passed on their dam's quality to their offspring, and from only three litters of pups, Molly is the dam, granddam and great granddam, great, great granddam etc. of more than 137 Grand Champions and 217 Champions that I know about, between 1975-1990.

Molly's grandson, GR.CH.'PR' Richard's General Fremont, was the first male Grand Champion in U.K.C. history. The first dog ever to receive the National Grand Champion designation was her grandson, GR.CH.'PR' Nevada Pits Dexter. The 1983 National Rare Breed dog of the Year was her grandson, GR.CH. 'PR' Cherry Pit's California Bandit. This was the first time an APBT had ever taken this honor. Molly's great, great grandson, NTL.GR.CH.GR.CH. From Molly's three litters, her ten daughters and two sons, who in turn produced and sired, were truly an asset to her, exhibiting Molly's fine qualities and temperament and passing it down to their offspring as Molly did.

I do believe that Molly is the only dog with this kind of record. It is truly fitting to honor such a great dog as Molly and recognize her contribution to the breed.

I sincerely thank Ron Sacca and the NTL GR CH GR CH 'PR' Stormin Norman for their generous contribution of the National Grand Championship Trophy in Molly's honor that will be awarded for ten years and started in 1996. Ironically, the first presentation of this award was won by NTL GR CH GR CH 'PR' Marauder's Meteor, a descendant of Molly, at the 1996 Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The National Champion of Champions Class Winner at the same show was also a Molly descendant, GR CH 'PR' Larum's Dynamic Dude. As time goes by, this list is sure to continue and only become harder for another great lady to take her place in the record book.

Molly passed away in May, 1985, after losing her battle with cancer. She was laid to rest at the Bubbling Well Pet Memorial Park overlooking the beautiful Napa Valley, near San Francisco, California. Visitors are always welcome. Go by and say Hi!
